Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge

Address:   Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

The Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge occupies one of the most spectacular locations of any hotel in the world. Perched on the eastern rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, this extinct volcano is now a conservation area, UNESCO World Heritage site and home to thousands of animals. The views from the lodge into the crater are spectacular and the game drives from the lodge offer you the real chance of seeing the rare black rhino and leopard. Its position also gives the most spectacular and uninterrupted view of the caldera and valley floor.

The lodge offers 91 rooms, each with views over the crater. They are spacious and comfortable and that breathtaking view will make it hard to tear yourself away.

The lodge has a private road down to the crater, and it is the only facility on the eastern side of the crater. The crater is home to over 25,000 large animals, which include black rhinoceros, hippopotamus, wildebeest, zebra, eland, gazelle, mountain reedbuck and buffalo. The crater also has the densest population of lions anywhere on the earth. Guests at Ngorongoro Sopa get an unobstructed view of the crater from many places at the property.

Guests will be delighted with their very spacious rooms that have a private bathroom and private sunroom. The sunrooms are equipped with rocking chairs, and provide guests with the perfect place to relax. Each room has two queen size beds. Each room also has an office area that is equipped with a writing desk. The area is completely carpeted for the comfort of the guests. The service at this lodge is superior and guests will find a hot water bottle placed in their bed each evening. The facility has a total of 96 rooms.

Guests can dine at the restaurant located on the grounds. Food choices include both local dishes and international dishes. Breakfast choices include bacon, sausage, eggs and cooked mushrooms and tomatoes. Most guests choose to take a sack lunch with them, which includes a sandwich, a snack and a piece of fruit and a muffin. Guests return to the lodge for dinner, which is served buffet style, and includes chicken, other meats, fish and vegetables. All food is prepared by chefs who have been given special training.

The lodge offers a variety of entertainment for its guests. Of course, the most popular are the trips to the crater floor. These trips can be made during the day and again at night. At night, the lodge also shows movies to entertain the guests and also acrobats amaze the guests with their stunts. Other day trips organized by the lodge include trips to the local villages and morning wildlife walks led by a specialist from the area.

The lodge also has a large kidney-shaped swimming pool. Many guests find it too chilly to swim, but it is a lovely place to sit and read a book. Sitting by the pool is one of the best places at the lodge to view the crater.
