The Karen Blixen Camp is situated in the Northern concession of the Masai Mara National Park. This new area was added to the main reserve a few years ago and now forms a seemless extension of the main reserve, untouched by previous tourists. Karen Blixen is a permanent camp- meaning that the spacious tents are built over a mahogany floor and have a thatched roof. They are all beautifully decorated, with large double beds, en suite bathrooms and electricity. Each has a lovely verandah with day bed that looks out over the Mara River. There are 22 luxurious tents in total.
The location of the camp is wonderful, with the restaurant, bar and lawns all overlooking a meander in the Mara river which is home to a large number of hippos. Behind this an escarpment rises forming a beautiful backdrop covered in acacia trees.
Behind the camp there are many tracks heading off into the surrounding plains and hills and offering many great game drive opportunities. It is also very close to Leopard Gorge, as well as the territory of several lions and cheetahs that have appeared in the BBC's Big Cat Diary programme.
Tea can be taken on the lawn, supper either in the dining area or on the veranda and coffee around the fire pit. Many animals and birds come to drink from the river as well, meaning that as you relax you can continue to enjoy the wildlife that the Mara has to offer.
There is a pool for those who wish to swim, a masseuse for a relaxing massage and the camp prides itself on its community projects - including a catering school for training young Maasai which you can visit.
For the visitors that like old-world charm and style the Karen Blixen Camp offers an enriching safari experience. Guests can arrive at Karen Blixen Camp in a variety of ways. By local flights from African cities like Samburu, Nairobi, Mombasa, Naivasha, Lewa Downs, and Nayuki although some guests also arrive using their own private charter flights. The Shikar Airstrip is located only 40 minutes away from the Karen Blixen Camp, and it is the airstrip of choice for this camp.
Every one of the 22 luxury tents at the Karen Blixen Camp is set up on a gorgeous verandah. The wooden platform in each tent gives a sophisticated, yet rustic feeling to the luxury tent. The cozy daybed out on the viewing deck allows one to fully relax and simply marvel at the surrounding natural beauty.
Staying within the tents at the Karen Blixen Camp is sure to be a luxurious experience. Every tent comes fully outfitted with a king size bed, Persian rugs, and lovely minibar. The minibar is fully stocked so that one can enjoy a refreshing drink in the morning, afternoon, or evening. A plush armchair can also be found within each tent, and this gives visitors the opportunity to relax and write letters or read a book.
Every tent has a private bathroom and sink. The outside shower offers one a bathing experience unlike anything else. There is nothing quite amazing as showering outside and looking up into the beautiful African skies. Gas burners allow the water to become heated, so that the camp does not waste any of the precious surrounding woodlands for fire.
While every tent has only one bed, other arrangements can be made with prior notice. Families with children can request a second, third, or even fourth bed be added to a particular tent. There is even a family unit available at the campsite, which contains two tents and a shared verandah.
From one's tent, one will have beautiful views of the Mara River. Wildlife frequently walk up to the Mara River to get a drink of water and cool off. Watching zebras bathe in the Mara River while you enjoy a sundowner or your evening meal is truly incredible.
There are many other activities to be enjoyed at the Karen Blixen Camp, including therapeutic and spa treatments. There is always something to be enjoyed by everyone at the Karen Blixen Camp.
