Day safari A day on safari

A day on safari is a mixture of excitement and relaxation. Although a day on safari will vary depending on the country you are in and the property you are staying at, it will always be basically similar to the typical day described here. This is because the animals you are there to see are most active in the early morning and late afternoon when the heat is at its most comfortable. This is therefore the best time to see them, otherwise they are sitting in the grass or in the shade and are very difficult to spot.
What happens when
6.00 a.m. Wake up and have a hot drink and snack.

6.30 a.m. Depart on your morning Game drive. The morning is a wonderful time in Africa. In many places a light mist rises from the ground, giving a fresh feel and bringing up wonderful smells of the African soil. It is surprisingly cold in the African dawn so remember to bring a coat and hat – blankets are also usually available in open safari vehicles. You are often out for sunrise, when the landscape changes its colour by the minute as the suns rays slowly strengthen. Many of the animals are making their way to water holes or rivers to drink and starting their day of endless grazing. The carnivores are also waking up, starting to warm themselves and look out for a passing breakfast.

9.30 a.m. Back to your Camp/Lodge for a quick wash and then a full cooked breakfast.

10.30 a.m. At leisure. Many of our properties have swimming pools to relax around, although great care must be taken with the strength of the sun. There are places to sit and relax, maybe reading a book or flicking through the bird and animal guides supplied by the lodge/camp. Most tents/rooms have their own private verandas, all accommodations have grounds and gardens with great views and surroundings.
There are often additional things to do, such as additional game-drive, or a walking safari with a guide.

1 p.m. Lunch. Followed with time to relax or have a siesta.

3.00 -.3.30 p.m. Depart on your afternoon game-drive. You normally stay out until dusk, enjoying the sight of the African sun slipping below a distant horizon. It is a great time for photographers, not only for the warm orange light, but because of the game that has all come out to drink and feed before dark. Often you stop for sundowners ( a drink) before heading back.

7 – 7.30 p.m. Dinner at your Lodge/Camp. Sometimes a Brai (barbeque), often taken outdoors by a camp fire, it is a chance to satisfy your hunger as few things give you such an appetite as safari. Afterwards there is the chance to sit out on the terrace with a drink or cup of fresh Kenyan coffee, enjoying the sounds of the bush and the sight of millions of stars in the dark night sky.
