Chobe National Park
No Botswana safari would be complete without a visit to Chobe. Elephants, big cats and a breath-taking range of scenery under a huge African sky.

Chobe National Park covers an area of 10,566 square kilometres, making it the second largest National Park in Botswana. Its claim to fame is the sheer quantity of wildlife it is home to, including one of the largest populations of elephant in Africa. Combine this with the typical African landscapes and you have an unrivalled safari holiday destination.

Chobe can be divided into 4 distinct regions, each with its own ecosystem. There are the Savuti marshlands in its west, the Linyanti Swamps in the north-west, Serondela to the north-east with lush grazing and forest and the dry hinterland between them all. Originally the area was the home to the Basarwa people, otherwise known as the San, who were hunter-gatherers. As early as 1932 the first protected area came into existence with the banning of hunting but it was not until 1967 that the region received its National Park status, the first in Botswana.

The elephant population of Chobe is approximately 120,000, and they are famous for being the largest elephants in the world. They also have an annual migration from the Chobe and Linyanti river areas in the dry season to the south of the park in the wet. The Savuti area is famous for its predators, most notably for its lion and hyenas, but because of its terrain is one of the best game-viewing areas in the whole of Africa. Lots of animals and not many people.

The sheer diversity of landscape of Chobe makes it the ideal venue for a Botswana safari holiday. From the wetlands of Linyanti swamp to the dry plain of the central zone, there is a diversity of flora and bird-life rivalled only by that of the animals. Its scale is incredible and the game-viewing private and exciting.
