Day 1
An early morning departure from The Safari Club in Johannesburg takes us via Pretoria, Potgietersrus and through the Limpopo Province into Botswana via the Platjan border post. We proceed to the area known as the Tuli Block. This thin strip of land in the south-east of Botswana, borders Zimbabwe to the north and South Africa to the south. It is one of the few areas of commercial farmland as it receives more rain than the rest of Botswana. The land in the extreme east is where the game reserves have been established with huge herds of elephants and hundreds of colourful birds. We will head off for a game drive either in the evening of day 1 or the next morning, depending on the time of arrival. We will enjoy our evening meal prepared by our guide around the campfire before spending our first night in the African wilderness.
Day 2
Our destination today is the Khama Rhino Sanctuary. The Khama Rhino Sanctuary Trust is a community based wildlife project, established in 1992 to assist in saving the vanishing white rhino, restore an area formerly teeming with wildlife to its previous natural state and provide economic benefits to the local Batswana community through tourism and the sustainable use of natural resources. We explore the sanctuary on an afternoon game drive in search of white rhinos.
Day 3
Today is a long driving day. We head north to the Magkadigkadi Pans. This area incorporates a multitude of salt pans and vast grass plains dotted by palm islands and forms the Great Makgadikagidi which comprises of the largest area of salt pans in the world covering some 37 000 sq. km in overall extent. It is the last vestiges of Africa’s largest inland sea and exudes an atmosphere of antiquity and mystery. The Nata River delta feeds the Sua Pan in the Nata sanctuary and forms the breeding ground for a host of water birds including pelicans and flamingo in their thousands, transforming the shore line into a pink haze blending into the western sky. We spend the evening relaxing at our lodge.
Day 4
After breakfast we head off for Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta. The name Maun is derived from the San word “maung”, which means “the place of short reeds”. The afternoon is yours to spend at leisure, either relaxing next to the pool at the lodge or if you are keen for some excitement, why not book a scenic flight over the Okavango Delta.
Day 5
After breakfast we will be picked up by our local Botswana guides and take a short drive to the mokoro station. From here, we will float in dug-out canoes through the thick vegetation of the Okavango Delta discovering a variety of birds and wildlife. Unlike other deltas, it flows into the Kalahari Desert without ever reaching the coast. After this spectacular excursion, we make our way to our camp, which is situated in close proximity to the famous Khwai River. After settling into our camp, we will enjoy dinner and embark on a night game drive – a fantastic opportunity to spot some nocturnal animals that are more difficult to encounter during the day.
Day 6
Today will be spent in the Khwai area. We will embark on an early morning game drive and in the afternoon we enjoy a sunset game drive, hopefully spotting the variety of animals that frequent the region. Khwai is renowned for its large concentrations of mammals and its exceptional location makes it a regular host to elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dogs. Birdlife is also abundant with exceptional sightings of wildfowl and raptors.
Day 7
After having explored the Khwai area we now head into the famous Moremi Game Reserve known as one of the most beautiful and varied reserves in Africa with an unprecedented concentration of wildlife. The full day is spent in the unspoiled nature of the Moremi Game Reserve which is home to a great diversity of plant and animal life - making it a ‘must see' for a Botswana Safari. It contains - within its boundaries - approximately 20% of the Delta, and a vast range of habitats, acacia forests, floodplains, reed beds, lagoons, enduring wetland through mopane forest and dry savanna woodland.
Days 8-9
We have to get up early, as there is another exciting day ahead of us! We leave the camp in Khwai River and transit through the national parks of Moremi, Savuti and Chobe to Kasane. Keep an eye out for the wildlife that calls this area home. The next day is spent with a morning game drive in search of Africa’s Big Five! We enjoy the afternoon on a sunset cruise on the Chobe River. Along with many species of big game, Chobe National Park boasts the largest concentration of elephant in Africa, hippo, water birds, buffalo, crocodile and puku are also viewed from the river.
Days 10-11
Today we leave Botswana behind us and after a short drive we enter Zimbabwe, home to one of the 7 natural wonders of the world, the mighty Victoria Falls. You have the rest of the day at leisure to partake in one of the many activities on offer. The next day we get to view the falls on a guided tour through the Victoria Falls National Park.
Day 12
Your journey ends today and you will be transferred to Victoria Falls Airport in time for your departing flight.
