Safari Botswana: Where to go

The Okavango Delta is the most popular destination on any safari to Botswana. It covers some 6,000 km and the intricate system of lagoons, marshes and rivers is best explored with a knowleageable local guide aboard a mokoro; the traditional canoe fashioned from a hollowed-out tree. The lagoons are teeming with a multitude of fish species and the savannah and grasslands attract elephant, giraffe, lion, leopard and cheetah.

When to go to Botswana

Traditionally the best months for safaris in Botswana are April to October, in terms of both weather and game viewing. During this period the wildlife of the great spaces gather around what water there is; the natural waterholes and borehole-fed dams, and are at their most visible.

However Botswana is a year-round destination, with the green (wet) and shoulder seasons still offering excellent game-viewing and offering good value for money.

What to do in Botswana

The big attraction of Botswana is safari. Botswana contains vast amounts of space - it is well over twice the size of the UK but has a population of under 2 million. Much of its land comprises of harsh, inhospitable terrains but there is also plenty that is home to a vast array of African wildlife and some fascinating cultures.

The most unique place to visit in Botswana is the Okavango Delta. This is formed by the Okavango River, which rises in the Angolan Heights before flowing into Northern Botswana. Here it becomes trapped by the low-lying areas and the waters slowly evaporate and soak away in the burning sun. the Okavango river is the largest river in the word not to flow into the sea and instead gives creates an incredible network of lagoons, channels, marshes and wetlands.

The best way to explore them is by "mokoro", a traditional local canoe hollowed out of the trunk of a single tree. It is the best way to go on safari and most camps within the Delta offer game-viewing by mokoro, each punted along by expert handlers. It is also a perfect place to go on a walking safari. There is lots to see and nothing brings Botswana alive more than a walk through its wilderness escorted by an expert guide.

With the waters, which flood every spring, comes a huge array of colourful flora, which in turn attracts a huge variety of animals and birds. It is a landscape unique to Botswana and a must on any safari holiday there.

Another world-famous place to visit in Botswana is Chobe National Park in the North East of the country. This area of wilderness, kept fed with water by the Chobe river is home to some of the largest elephant herds left anywhere in Africa, often over 100 strong. You can enjoy safari here also by boat, although because of the rivers deeper waters it tend to be by electric boat now.

A safari holiday in Botswana is an unforgettable experience. Many of the camps in the Okavango and surrounding areas such as Moremi Game Reserve are luxurious, small and isolated. They cater for only a few guests at a time, probably eight to twelve on average, allowing you to really get a feel of the scale and solitude of the African bush. Many are in concessions - large tracts of land they have n exclusive use of, ensuring that the landscape is wild and untouched and you see nobody else for the duration of your safari other than those staying at your camp.

Just because you are isolated does not mean you are roughing it, anything but. The facilities, food and service are superb, the locations of the camps often breath-taking and the safari itself reaching deep into the Real Africa.

As well as an unforgettable safari holiday Botswana also has some other fascinating features. The Kalahari desert, with its unique wildlife and San bushmen is also a worthwhile destination, combining visits to the tribe with examples of their ancient art such as that found in the Tsodilo Hills.

Vast salt pans, massive baobab trees up to 4,000 years old, the list goes on. One thing's for sure. A luxury safari to Botswana gives you an insight into the true wild heart of Africa.
