Tanzania has dismissed reports that it was open a border crossing between the Masai Mara Reserve,
Kenya and the Serengeti National Park in
Tanzania. This would have made travel between these two wonderful wildlife areas much shorter, but raised concerns of damaging the protected eco-system. It was the Sand River/Bologonja border crossing point that was mentioned.
TTB has seen the need to clarify distorted information to avoid confusing and inconveniencing tourists intending to visit Serengeti National Park and Maasai Mara Game Reserve, as per a circular e-mail issued by the Kenya Association of Tour Operators (KATO) on September 18.
Tanzania has no intention of reopening the Sand River/Bologonja border point. The entry point will remain closed for environmental reasons. The fragile ecosystem of the area, which is a World Heritage Site, cannot be sacrificed for the purpose of shortening the route between Maasai Mara and Serengeti, said the organisation in a statement.
