Selous Game report for June 09
The winter flowering Sennas are already in full bloom giving a splash of yellow to the drying environment.
At night time the leaf litter provides much food for the imagination as the many different nocturnal animals
make their way around in the early hours of the cooling mornings. The seasonal changes come quickly here
in the Selous, just as the level of the river seems to fill up over night, it drains away leaving us only a few
reminders of how it was in full flow. Food for the grazers is becoming scarce, it always amazes how they
survive until the rains come in November, the Hippos never leave a blade of grass untouched, their evidence
can been seen from the skies as trails cutting deeply into the ground, giving the look of small river channels
winding their way to the lakes.
As usual the bird island has provided us with yet another great and very rare sighting, a Dark Morph Little
Egret. It was spotted amongst the many other water birds that are breeding there at the moment. The island
is where one of the Chiefs of the Nzerakera tribe was buried over a hundred years ago. Local legend says
that is why all the birds breed on the island.
The highlight this month has to be the discovery of a wild dog den close to where our flycamp is situated.
The alpha female has managed to produce 7 pups, the record for a litter is 19 pups! They are now about 6
weeks old and the pack may use the den for another 2 months. Every one of our guests has had the privilege
of seeing these endangered carnivores.
